STATEMENT: SAVE THE CHILDREN, GUATEMALA

STATEMENT ILLUSTRATION

Save the Children works in Guatemala and in more than 100 countries, doing whatever it takes – every day and in times of crisis – so children can fulfill their rights to a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn, and protection from harm. With over 100 years of expertise, we are the world’s first and leading independent children’s organization.

Save the Children strongly reaffirms that it has not and has never been involved in cases of trafficking of children and adolescents out of Guatemala or any kind of abuses to children. The organization is fully committed to cooperate with the authorities in any inquiry or investigation into such cases.

Following two raids on our offices this year and two rejections by courts to assist in this case, Save the Children has filed a writ of amparo with the Constitutional Court asking to be considered a part of the process and thus have access to information contained in the judicial file. The purpose of this action is to ensure that the Guatemalan criminal justice system allows Save the Children to fully exercise its right to defense against accusations and raids. To date there has been no direct accusations made against us and no evidence against us.

Save the Children, a UK-based organization, has been operating in Guatemala since 1976. We provide education, health and nutrition, protection and humanitarian support to Guatemalan children, adolescents and families. We will continue to work to defend children's rights, as we have always done, maintaining the highest standards of protection and safeguarding in all our programs.
